Spray Painted Shoes

While out garage sale shopping this summer, I found these little flats--and even though I wasn't crazy about the color--The price was right!

I like pink--and actually wear quite a lot of pink.  But these shoes were ROSE colored--not pink.  So they were just not working out in their original color.

My AWESOME sister, Michelle, had a similar problem with a pair of her shoes--and she SPRAY PAINTED them!  You have to see her AWESOME shoes HERE.

So, once again--I turned to my trusty can of spray paint.

First I taped off the bottoms--and stuffed a plastic bag inside the shoe to catch all the over spray.

Then I started spraying.

This picture is after the first coat:
At this point I was wondering if this was such a good idea--and if it would really work.

But after some drying time and another coat of paint--they were looking NEAR perfect (meaning they looked fantastic--but there were just a couple traces of the pink showing through at the seams--nothing anyone else would ever notice)!

But when I say NEAR perfect--that usually means I should stop there and be satisfied with a job well done.  But it almost always means that I don't stop there--and I try for PERFECTION.  And SOMETIMES that means that I then MESS THINGS UP WHILE TRYING TO GET THEM PERFECT!!!!

This was one of those times.

For some reason--the final coat of paint that I decided the shoes just HAD TO HAVE--did this:
And this:

AARRRGGGG!!!!  Frustration!!!!

Luckily I only started the last coat of paint at the heel of both shoes and noticed what was happening and STOPPED spraying.  So this damage is only on the heels.

NORMALLY this kind of thing would drive me BATTY!  And I wouldn't be able to sleep at night until I had sanded them both down and re painted them till they looked right!

But--this time I have decided it doesn't really matter.  These kinds of flats I normally wear with a pair of jeans that usually hang over the heels of my shoes ANYWAYS.  And when I put them on and look down--I can hardly see the crackling--so I'm sure no one else will notice it either!

So there.  I am leaving them.

And from the front--they look FABULOUS!!!

And just because I love the before/after pictures...here we go:

Before:

After:

Even despite the crackling of the paint--this was a SUPER fun project--and I am DEFINITELY going to keep my eyes peeled for another pair I can re-do.  I have a fun limey green color of spray paint that would look AMAZING on a pair of shoes!!!

Once again--with spray paint--the possibilities are ENDLESS!!

  14. I had never seriously even had a passing thought about spray painting shoes. I guess I thought unless one used a fabric dye or something that coloring would make shoes stiff or that eventually the color would crack or peel. This is the second post this week that I have seen with spray painted shoes. (The other was cloth ballet slippers.)
You will have to do a follow up post in a few weeks letting us know how well they wear.
    They look fabulous.

I could use stone look paint for concrete shoes for a Halloween monster!

  24. I had the same idea a while back and spray painted some shoes that I ordered from ebay. The only problem was that after I wore them a couple of days the top of the shoe (where my foot bends and the shoe creases) started chipping off! help! Is there a certain type of spray paint I should use?

  26. I sprayed painted mine as well, but I did not spray it with polyurethane to prevent from cracking and so far I have no problems yet. No cracking or anything! The paint stayed on and I am loving it. Yours turn out okay. I guess the one on the back is sort of like part of the art. :)

  30. These are so adorable... but I must be the only one that is worried about the toxicity leaking into your skin when you sweat... Just lost my mom 3 months ago to cancer. Crazy how I look at things now. They are so cute though! Wonder if there is a more non-toxic way to do this?

  31. Well, I am so glad that I am not the only crazy, stingy mom. My daughter had to have a pair of brown pumps for a school pagent, interview. Do you know how hard it is to buy brown in the spring???? Well, we looked every where. I mean EVERYWHERE. She either hated them or they didnt have her size. We found a pair of black pumps. I put news paper in the shoes, and sprayed the heck outta them. Eureka! Brown pumps! We still have the shoes after 3 years. Every so often, we have had to do a touch up. Save the paint can and mark it "shoes" Hey, what woman or woman wannabe get rid of shoes?

  32. did you use a specific type of spray paint?

If you do not like the color of your slippers just spray color to change . The concept is good i will try this definitely.

  34. I have some navy cute designer wedges I got on eBay and I love the tops, but the plasticene heels faded to a kind of wood-grain look which is cheesy. Now that's wearing off a little, too. It's really hard to find navy this year and I need them for work, so I'm going to try painting the heels black, leaving the top patent alone. I just have to figure out the best prep method so the paint will really stick and not scuff so easily. Thanks for the idea!
